River and gardens, no ticket required.
Start with the James River Park System. More than 20 miles of trails stretch along both sides of the river, with everything from easy river views on Belle Isle to quieter wooded sections and longer walks. Cooler temperatures and changing leaves make fall one of the best times to explore it. You do not need to tackle the whole system, either. Pick one section, take the walk that fits the day, and save another stretch for next weekend.
Maymont is another easy choice. The grounds are free, giving you access to gardens, lawns, wooded paths, and plenty of room to wander without buying admission. Some indoor attractions and tours cost extra, but the basic outing does not. In fall, the mix of open lawns, shaded paths, gardens, and wooded sections gives you a different outing as the season changes.
